Dr. Jacqueline “Jackie” Salit is one of the most influential and respected voices in the United States Independent voter movement. She has long argued that Independents represent the future of American democracy. As she puts it:
“Independents are not a fringe group. They are the new American mainstream — and the future of our democracy depends on whether the system finally makes room for them.”
Currently a Professor of Practice at Arizona State University, Salit serves as Co-Director of the Center for an Independent and Sustainable Democracy at ASU’s School of Public Affairs. She is also a State Committee Member of the Arizona Independent Party, where she works to protect and expand Independent organizing and ballot access in Arizona.
For over three decades, Salit has been a leading strategist, organizer, and thinker dedicated to empowering Independent voters, now the largest voting bloc in the country. She has advised Independent candidates, helped shape reform efforts, and consistently challenged the dominance of the two-party system.
She is the author of Independents Rising (2012) and co-author of The Independent Voter (2022).
