Dr. Thom Reilly is a leading scholar, author, and advocate for iIndependent voters and nonpartisan democracy in America. He has argued that Independents, especially younger generations like Gen Z, are fundamentally reshaping the country's political future. As he has noted:
"Independent voters are not just a swing vote they are becoming the decisive force in American politics, and our democracy must adapt to their growing power."
Currently a Professor in the School of Public Affairs at Arizona State University, Reilly serves as Co-Director of the ASU Center for an Independent and Sustainable Democracy. His active research and public commentary focus on how independents, particularly Gen Z, are transforming modern elections and governance.
Beyond his focus on electoral reform, Dr. Reilly brings decades of high-level government executive experience to his analysis, having previously served as the Chancellor of the Nevada System of Higher Education, the County Manager for Clark County, Nevada (Las Vegas), and the head of Nevada's child welfare system.
He is the author of several books examining government structures, public systems, and electoral behavior, including:
The Independent Voter (Routledge, 2022) Co-authored with Jacqueline Salit and Omar H. Ali, exploring the rise and impact of the unaligned electorate.
The Failure of Governance in Bell, California: Big-Time Corruption in a Small Town (Lexington Books, 2016) An in-depth analysis of municipal corruption and the breakdown of local oversight.
