Freedom House: “Expanding and defending freedom globally.”
Freedom House: “Expanding and defending freedom globally.”

Freedom House is one of the oldest and most respected independent organizations fighting to protect democracy and human rights worldwide. Founded in 1941 by Eleanor Roosevelt, Wendell Willkie, and a bipartisan group of prominent Americans, Freedom House was created to rally public opinion against the rising tide of fascism during World War II.

Upon its founding, Eleanor Roosevelt famously captured the permanent stakes of this work, noting:

"Freedom makes a huge requirement of every human being. With freedom comes responsibility. For the person who is unwilling to grow up, the person who does not want to carry his own weight, this is a frightening prospect."

Today, that responsibility has transformed Freedom House into the world's premier watchdog for global political freedom and civil liberties.

Where They Work: Supporting the Frontlines

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., Freedom House conducts research, advocacy, and direct, on-the-ground support in more than 100 countries. They don't just study systems from afar; they actively fund and protect the people operating within them. They monitor compromised elections, provide emergency financial and legal aid to persecuted activists, train independent journalists in hostile environments, and aggressively document human rights abuses inside authoritarian regimes.

Leadership with a Mission

The organization is led by Chief Executive Officer Jamie Fly, a widely respected democracy and national security expert who took the helm in February 2026. Fly, who previously led Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and worked to defend Ukrainian democracy in the private sector, frames Freedom House’s ongoing struggle as a vital, active defense of global stability and human dignity. Upon stepping into the role at a critical junction for global liberty, Fly emphasized the high stakes of the organization's modern mission:

“I am excited and honored to join Freedom House at this critical moment for democracy and global freedom... in the midst of significant change. [We will] continue serving as a beacon to those on the front lines of the struggle for freedom.”

Interactive Freedom Map

Freedom House is globally renowned for its flagship annual report, Freedom in the World, which maps out the exact state of political rights and civil liberties in every single country on earth. Because of its hyper-rigorous, data-driven framework, this report serves as an authoritative baseline for governments, journalists, international corporations, and policymakers worldwide to hold rogue regimes accountable.

A Legacy of Success

Freedom House's impact is measured by decades of quiet, high-stakes support for historic freedom movements.

During the Cold War, when the Soviet bloc felt impenetrable, Freedom House smuggled underground printing presses, illegal literature, and financial aid to the Solidarity movement in Poland, keeping the anti-communist resistance alive until the regime collapsed.

Today, their vital work continues despite the danger. From providing secure digital communication tools to independent media outlets dodging crackdowns in Eastern Europe, to orchestrating legal defense funds for arbitrarily detained activists in Latin America, Freedom House acts as a global shield for those fighting to keep the flame of liberty lit.
