Building a Stronger America Through Bipartisan Solutions

We've all felt the concern. Trust in government is near historic lows, partisan gridlock dominates the headlines, and many Americans wonder whether leaders can still put problem-solving ahead of party loyalty. In times like these, democracy depends not just on elections, but on practical cooperation that delivers real results for the country.

Enter The Bridge.

Introducing The Bridge

The Bridge is a series hosted by the Hopkins Bloomberg Center, Johns Hopkins University's academic and public-engagement hub in the heart of Washington, D.C. The series invites bipartisan lawmakers to share how they are working across the aisle to build a stronger America through practical policy solutions.

It does not endorse candidates or platforms. Instead, it creates a nonpartisan space for senators and representatives from both parties to discuss concrete areas of agreement and the work required to turn those agreements into law.

The Mission: Highlighting Cross-Aisle Progress

The Bridge focuses on real collaboration happening in Congress. Recent conversations have featured:

  • Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) on their bipartisan INSULIN Act, which seeks to cap insulin costs at $35 per month for private plans and expand access to generics and biosimilars, alongside the need for continued federal diabetes research funding.

  • Sens. Alex Padilla (D-CA) and Todd Young (R-IN) on securing America's biotech future and maintaining U.S. leadership amid global competition.

  • Discussions on AI policy, ocean conservation (including the Save Our Seas Act 2.0), and hypersonics research for national security.

Each event pairs lawmakers with Johns Hopkins researchers and experts, connecting policy work to evidence-based insights.

Practical Conversations in the Nation's Capital

Hosted at the Hopkins Bloomberg Center (which opened in fall 2023 at 555 Pennsylvania Avenue), The Bridge brings together members of Congress for focused discussions. Sessions are often moderated by Hopkins experts, such as Tom Inglesby of the Center for Health Security, and sometimes co-hosted with groups like the Capitol Hill Steering Committee on Health Security.

Videos, highlight clips, and written summaries are made publicly available, giving independents and others a clear window into bipartisan efforts that rarely dominate the daily news cycle.

Why It Matters for Independent Minds

For the growing number of Americans who identify as Independent and want results over rhetoric, The Bridge offers something valuable: visible examples of leaders choosing cooperation over conflict. It does not demand loyalty to either party. It simply shows where progress is possible when lawmakers focus on shared challenges: health costs, technological leadership, national security, and conservation.

In an era of deep division, platforms that elevate practical bipartisanship strengthen the kind of problem-solving democracy requires.

How You Can Join the Effort

Creating space for bipartisan lawmakers to focus on practical solutions helps strengthen the cooperation our democracy needs to function. That is why we have chosen The Bridge as our Defender of Democracy to highlight this week.

Civic progress depends on informed citizens who reward cooperation:
